When a child experiences instability, neglect, or abuse, they are affected in countless ways. We support the whole child at Christ’s Haven, ensuring their physical, emotional, spiritual, and academic needs are met. Even more, we want to ensure they have the opportunity to thrive.
Whether a child lives at Christ’s Haven for several months or several years, they receive individualized, comprehensive education support. These are just a few stories of education success, or what we see as stories of hope:
A preschooler came to live at Christ’s Haven a year ago and just graduated from Pre-K. He now knows all of his letters, letter sounds, and early reading skills. He is Kindergarten ready, and we are confident he has an important foundation for learning.
A 1st grader came to Christ’s Haven struggling academically but his houseparents and staff knew there was so much potential. Within two school years of individualized academic support, he is now above the national average reading level compared to other 3rd graders.
A 3rd grader who has seen benefits from tutoring has made wonderful strides in her depth of reading skills. She has eagerly been part of our Read Aloud Program reading the book, “A Tale of Despereaux,” which provides opportunities to look up new words and even translate French words.
A 6th grader came to live at Christ’s Haven recently. While trying to pull together past school records and transcripts, it became clear she had missed a lot of school over the years. There were gaps in her core math competencies and although she had a significant speech delay, she had never been evaluated by a speech therapist. We see so much opportunity for growth and hope.
This May we celebrated the high school graduation of a young man who joins his older brother as the first in their family to receive a high school diploma. He has overcome so much to achieve the milestone, and we celebrate this important accomplishment.
The research and statistics can be heartbreaking. We know that the abuse or neglect a child experiences can have lifelong implications in many ways, including their education.
Will you make a financial gift to help change the trajectory of a child’s life?
Christ’s Haven for Children does not receive any state or federal funding, relying solely on the generosity of the community. We receive donations from individuals, churches, foundations, businesses, civic groups, and others.
